BVSDwatch.org Recruits Candidates for BVSD Board PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 19 March 2007

If it’s not too early for Hillary, Rudy, etc. to start campaigning for ’08, it’s certainly not too early to think about running for the BVSD school Board in the November election of this year.  BVSDwatch.org is interested in endorsing four candidates, one for each seat that is open, and we are starting our process now.

If you are considering running for the BVSD Board, or wish to suggest someone we can recruit, please contact us through this website.  We are interested in helping qualified candidates develop their platform and, for candidates we choose to endorse, assist them in developing and implementing a campaign, including fund raising.  If you have a passion for education and the drive to promote positive change, our organization’s support will be valuable to you in seeking a BVSD Board seat.

Candidates are elected at-large (i.e., voted on by all BVSD voters) but must reside in one of three geographic neighborhoods (see this link for a map of each):

District A:  Central Boulder.  This is the only seat that will be contested by an incumbent should Helayne Jones choose to run again.(Update: Helayne Jones is running for re-election)

District C: South Boulder and into the mountains including Nederland.  There will be no incumbent running for this seat as Angelika Schroeder is term-limited.

District D: North Boulder. This is Ken Roberge's district, and at this time we are unsure of the status of his seat. We do not know if he will be running again, or if he is term limited. (Update: Ken Roberge is running for re-election)

District G: Lafayette and northeast section of BVSD.  There will be no incumbent running for this seat as Theresa Steele is term-limited.

With 4/7th of the Board up for election and a new superintendent taking the reins, this year could provide an opportunity for positive change in our school district.  Help us improve our district by considering a run for this office, or recommending a strong potential candidate.

how does it work for Helane as she was appointed - how many years does she get before she's term limited?

Too bad Paxton's not up for re-election. But a new majority on that Board could do a lot to better things for students and teachers in our district.

How is it the city of Boulder has a major say in 5 of the 7 districts? With the growth of the eastern cities; e.g., Louisville, Broomfield, etc... shouldn't they be given more options. We have a VERY diverse district community that is not getting proper representation. The district would be MUCH better off and make decissions in accordance with all students and families if there we could get MORE reps like Paxton. Maybe the district should let Broomfield county vote on whether they want to remain part of BVSD or unify their city and their voice in one district; e.g., Adams 12 or BVSD. Willing to bet on where they'd go?

With the fiasco of CWA and the audacity of our school board president trying to censor someone from speaking at a school board meeting (see it on this site the video of the May 8th meeting) regarding things BHS students had to sit through and hear, maybe it is finally time for Ms Jones to step down and not run again for school board this fall. Isn't enough enough yet?

I am running for Broomfield City Council, and one of my goals is improving the ability of parents to communicate with BVSD. Paxton did not respond to my email about the CWA, but she was the only one clearly saying the panel was inappropriate on May 22. So I will not be initiating a recall against her. However, I spoke with Senator Shawn Mitchell today about a Broomfield Unified School District, and he seemed very interested. There are big legal hurdles to this put in place at the time of the formation of the city and county of Broomfield. But this is now my goal, should I get elected.Going with Adams is not a bad idea.
If anyone is interested in recalling Jones (the most deserving), or others, I have the info, but the number of signatures is prohibitive! 40% of the # that voted in the last election! As opposed to other elected officials at 1-15%! I wonder who snuck that into the statute -- the teacher's union perhaps? It does seem reasonable, since Broomfield is a unique county, that it be separated from the Boulder Valley School District. I'm not sure of the tax/financial ramifications of that, but it certainly makes sense when you look at the populations involved. I'd be interested in joining any study groups formed to look into this.

A Broomfield Unified School district is a GREAT idea. I'll contact you Louise. Thank you for your initiative. A few thoughts:

On the "hurdle" of allocating existing BVSD "debt" - why not allocate debt based on relative revenue contributed by each community; e.g., per student state funding, property taxes contributions under various bond issuances, etc... This seems the only "fair" way to go... trying to actually "trace" use of debt funds to particular shools or communities would go no where.

Need to make this the "district of choice" for teachers. Think we should focus on ways to give the front line participants in the education system; e.g., give teachers and site administration (principals and counselors)(i) real "say" and input into the system without having to fear "retribution," ensuring they are compensated in the top 20% of their peer groups in the state, (iii) a formal means of defence against union actions / threats to withhold support (maybe an independently funded "district advocate" charged with representing the interests of the teachers in any legal actions, (iv) an independent "insurance" against legal actions instituted against them by "over-zelous" parents unless they act in a grossly negligent manner (e.g., sleeping with their students, etc...)

Making the new district a model when it comes to soliciting and SHARING community input; e.g., setting standards for giving the community (parents, students, all community members) notice of board decissions; using web to gather, track and report summary feedback (BVSD certainly can solicit feedback on things they want - changing the school calendar being one - but never tabulate and share the data - this is especially important when they make statments that vast majority of community feedback is in "favor" of the decission of the day without noting that the feedback was garnered from hand picked "focus groups" of 10 parents and staff in only selected communities).
