BVSDwatch.org would like to congratulate Dr. Chris King as the new Superintendent of the Boulder Valley School District. The board was faced with a difficult choice, but it is clear that Dr. King's experience with, and knowledge of BVSD was considered an overwhelming asset. While BVSDwatch.org was impressed with Dr. Sandra Smyser's experience as a superintendent, and with her positive attitude toward working with parents and community members as partners in education, we are confident that Dr. King will also work to cultivate those relationships, and we look forward to working with him to enhance the education opportunities for all students in BVSD.
If you would like to comment on the appointment of Dr. King to the Superintendent's position, please do so in the fields below. After July we'll see if Chris King will have the guts to clean house. I hope he will be able to start fresh and clean out the dead wood and yes men. I certainly hope Dr. King doesn't keep "more of the same" and I'm concerned about who he has taken his direction from - hopefully Dr. King will establish his own style and not take on that of Dr. Garcias! HE was a disaster for BVSD Guts to clean house? Chris King has been there for so long and has no experience elsewhere so he can't even see that admin needs it, that it is too heavy-handed, too expensive, organized into fiefdoms, and just plain broken. It's time to go forward, and start from a position of respect and trust that people will do the right thing, rather than a position of suspicion and doubt based on the past. Certainly, issues from the past remain, and both BVSD and Dr. King face many challenges ahead. With openness and honesty there is room for differences, compromise, and consensus. I'm cautiously optimistic Chris will be a positive for the district. Based on my interactions, believe he's well reasoned, willing to call a spade a spade, able to recognize and understand opposing view points even though he does not always agree with them. Hoping he'll take this opportunity to carve out his own path, marshall support for needed changes in the greater district community and move away from what seems to have been a historic "Boulder centric" viewpiont. Looking at demographic and social trends, the city of Boulder will continue to become a less significant community in the district - the other communities need to be given a bigger voice. The way he's handling the CWA business, it looks it's going to be more of the same. At this time he's ducking and hiding and hoping this whole thing goes away before he takes charge. Not a good sign..... |
