Page 2 of 3 No. 11 : Think many are missing the more salient points to this; e.g., regardless of whether this did or should have offended anyone's "sensibilities", is this something the our schools (a) should "require" kids to attend without parental notification and a chance to opt out, (b) should be focussing on or should leave to the parents who may want to address, may want to ignore, may want to indoctrinate their kids with opinion that the speakers are morally wrong, etc... I'd love to know did we have to spend a dime of district money on this? Would be hate to think this soaked up a penny that the majority may have thought could be put to better use in promoting sports, arts, and other extracurriculars. No. 12 : The official response from the BVSD should not surprise those who have "complained" in an effort to better the BVSD. "The district is reviewing, with school administrators, the complaint of a Boulder High School parent regarding both the content and staging of the panel." True to form, Dr. Garcia and Dr. King are hiding behind their vast and costly cadre of administrators, who "take care of'" complaining parent. It seems ridiculous that the official response from the BVSD refers to a complaint by a BHS parent. A parent? All of America is aware of the controversy. Dr. King cannot conveniently pin this complaint on an "irrational" parent. Dr. Jones and her fellow school board members are to blame for hiring Dr. King as the next superintendent, since his career was built by stonewalling parents. For sake of all students, let's cut our losses and pay Dr. King's severance, now. While we are at it, let's elect school board members who can discern the difference between a bureaucrat and a leader. BVSD's handling of the CWA controversy has been an embarrassment to Boulder County. No. 13 : I am a parent of six and my suggestion is for the parents and family to take back rather than deligate matters that are better discussed at the family level. The school's job is not to take the place of the family- however- the school and public agencies must start to better incorporate the family (bring the parents into the picture) and hold the family parents accountable for their children. To think or believe that the school has to replace the mother and father, and take it upon themselves (the school administartors/leaders) to do so makes no sense at all. The Boulder High School administrators clearly interfered and undermined the parental rights of every parent of every child who attended this University of Colorado sponsored panel. Mature, educated men and women showed extremely poor judgement when they allowed this panel to treat 14 years olds as if they were more mature and were able to make adult decisions, which they are not. The action by Becker is a disgrace to the psychological profession and he should be reprimanded by his professional peers/licensing authority; his actions may be illegal. The school principal must also be centured for his poor judgement (I would fire him immediately) and a message must be sent to these educators that there is a clear line in the sand between family respect and authority and the leaders' and teachers' of the school (third parties to the family) responsibility to protect this boundary. A child, 14 or 18 wants clear direction and not unlimited choices. Parent and tax payers have to stand up to this undesirable influence from the school administartion. Equally they must be better parents and take responsibility to teach and mentor each of their children; that is a parents job. This issue is not about religion or political views. It is about respect for the family, period. No. 14 : After reading the wishy washy statement of Dr. Garcia and the comments of Board President Helayne Jones at the last meeting (she was quoted in the Camera as saying the board would not be pushed around by a vocal minority) and backpedaling on her assessment that the panel was inappropriate and her apology to parents, I have one word: RECALL. I doubt if it is a minority of citizens who would object if given a voice.I will be waiting to view my representative 's(Paxton)comments at that last meeting on this site. I encourage especially those citizens in Jones' district to initiate a recall. No. 15 : Helayne Jones and the rest of BVSD has decided that the Whites are the problem here. That's their story and they're sticking to it, in spite of the fact that there has been public outrage over the panel's presentation at BHS. The latest tactic to discredit the Whites is accusing them of bringing a religious and political agenda into this. The Whites have not once brought up religion or politics, nor have they suggested that BHS should discontinue the conferences at BHS. In fact, the only person to suggest that has been the principal, Bud Jenkins! It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that the kids who are doing the things that quack psychologist recommended they do, and do them OFTEN, are the kids that are really screwed up. Duh! And not one mention from anyone on the panel of the nightmare of addiction. How utterly pathetic. I would encourage people to watch the BOE meeting that took place on May 22. BVSD is now on record for their support for the CWA panel discussion that took place at Boulder High. What on earth will the CWA present to our students next year? No. 16 : I have been very surprised by the lack of public outcry over the CWA panel. Also the unsatisfactory response of those in power - namely the school board and Dr. King. I just can't believe that Boulder parents/residents are that complacent, but perhaps they don't know exactly how to make themselves heard. I've decided to attend the next Board meeting to speak out - most especially about Jones' insult that anybody who objects to the panel has a religious or political agenda. Her attempt to smear those who have reasonable objections is what drove me to the point of action. I encourage anybody to come to the meeting and sign up to speak. The next one is scheduled for June 12th. All you have to do is call ahead and get your name on the speaker's list (you'll get 2 minutes to speak). It's that easy! Call 303-447-5114 to reserve your spot to speak (it's better than waiting to sign up AT the meeting, as the roster may be full by that time). You can find the address for the meeting on the BVSD calender on this website's home page. Hope to see you there! No. 17 : I am researching the recall of board members. If anyone can help, email me at

Thanks. No. 18 : This is liberal propaganda. The speakers statements show that they want to give a popular response instead of a morally correct answer and/or one that doesn't support breaking laws No. 19 : The focus on links to the Boulder Daily Camera as a "source" of accurate reporting and an accurate reflection of "communitiy" opinion really concern me. The paper serves what is increasingly a "minority" population in Boulder (its subscription rate outside of Boulder city proper is anemic) is not a fair or accurate representation of the BVSD's voice. From what I can tell, the "majority" of parents, students and financial support come from outside the city at this point; e.g., Louisville, parts of Longmont, Broomfield, etc... and this is only going to get more pronounced as the populations in these cities continue growing far more quickly than that in Boulder with its growth limitations. When is the school board going to make a real effort to "publicize" its actions in these other communities, solicit feedback from these other communities, etc... When and how can "board" districts be redrawn to more fairly represent the sensibilities of ALL communities the district is meant to serve? While I fully respecet and understand the political sensibilities of those in Boulder, I don't believe these are close to representative of the communities in Louisville, Longmont, Lafeyette, Nederland, Broomfield... We are NOT a homogeneous communty with norms set and decided in the narrow confines of Boulder. No. 20 : Since the updated links to this story are "on vacation" I'd like to fill in a few things I've learned. One, an apology letter has gone out to BHS parents detailing the failures to uphold Policy INB (Teaching about controversial issues) and is available from BVSD Communications (303-245-5824). Two, the Board discussion of this policy at the end of their meeting June 12 (not yet posted on this site) shows thoughtful discussion of how to strengthen the policy. However, BVSD has not yet done the most important thing: a second letter to parents to correct potential harm, by stating clearly what district teachings on sex and drugs are and encouraging a family discussion. As I told a small committed group outside last nite's board meeting, the district can be nudged into doing the right thing with calm, reasonable and persistant pressure from the public. They are on the right track; we need to keep up the pressure. Since the board is off in July, send emails to the district (esp Dr. King) and board, and start showing up at board meetings in August (14th and 28th, call 303-447-5114 in Aug to sign up, or just show up at 6pm) This issue is not over yet. Keep up the good work.PS Helayne Jones says they are very interested in creating an ombudsman position. |
