I just want to say that I agree that young adults should be able to make a choice, and in making a choice they should have all the information on the table. Knowledge is not your point of view or mine, it is having all the information and then making an informed decision that is best for you. I think this panel was wonderful. Kudos to you all. Teenagers need to know that they are not alone in their thoughts and feelings, if parents won't teach their kids, then they look elsewhere. Do we want them being prey to the evils in the street or do we want them informed when they are out on their own? I choose informed. We talked about sex in my family AFTER my sister conceived at 15, I think it helped me make healthy and informed decisions in my life, and I plan to educated my kids the same way. They have a choice.

I am a mother of two young children and it frightens me to think that this is what our High Schools are advocating. There is a right way to discuss teenage sexual urges and how to live in a sexually promiscuous society, BUT THIS WASN'T IT!

Having just completed reading the transcript in the privacy of my home, I am feeling grimy just like I did when I was flashed on the New York subway 30 years ago. Indecent exposure. I was really, really hoping to be able to to defend our community over this. I am as liberal as anyone should be. But since when is the term liberal synonomous with tasteless indiscretion.
I am full of shame. And I am grateful my child did not attend this conference -- she would have been mortified, and might have made associations between her mother and the generation of the panelists. Our children have long lost their innocence to the media; I doubt the panel disclosed any new information to them. To suffer through the the innappropriatness and tedium of the panel members' personal experiences, delivered through intolerable misuse of the English language, must have been humiliating for them. If I am going to start taking offense at people telling others how to live their lives, I think I will start with Becker telling our students to have sex. In fact, if he is so sure that they are having sex, why doe he need to tell them to do so? This panel is not appropriate to any age group. It REALLY concerns me that our BHS teachers did not walk their students out of the assembly based, if nothing else, on the low quality of LANGUAGE USE AND CONTENT.

Thanks for transcribing the tape. It changed view of the topic. When first hearing the excerpts on the show, I was incensed. Now I'm a little ashamed that I let myself be "fooled." Yes, Dr. Becker was completely inappropriate at times. He reminds me of the class clown who is trying to gain acceptance, but isn't really funny. But the other panelists made some good points, esp. the part about forever "having a whole in your heart" after an abortion. The last student to speak was amazing!

Isn't it amazing how we are so busy name-calling: liberals, religious right, conservative...that we don't recognize smut when we see it. We would rather find blame among ourselves than hold the panel accountable for their pornographic presentation. I am NOT a religious person but I know ignorance when I hear it. The only person with valid and appropriately presented information was Sanho Tree. The other three were out of the gutter talking filth to our children. They should be fired from their jobs. What they did is easily comparable to the Ward Churchill situation. Does anyone care that NEXT year, if we don't want to expose our students to this crap, they GET TO miss a day or two of valid education? The board's responses do not represent mine as a parent.

Think about how people get hepatitus...exposure to viruses that live in ...poop. Every doctor will tell you not to get any "fecal matter" inside of other.."openings" in the body because of the disease risk. Then think about how homosexual males have sex with eachother.
UNHEALTHY! Why encourage kids to kill themselves? the average gay man dies at the age of 42. And that's not men infected by age. There is a reason for this. It's unnatural & unhealthy. Sometimes what feels good isn't good for us. The people with the sexiest, most fulfilling sex lives I know are couples who were both virgins until they got married.
Imagine that!

..."One of the things I’m afraid happens in the religious movement is they don’t give the same choice to other people. They try to tell other people that what they’re doing is right, and what these people are doing is wrong. That’s my issue. I think you’re very right for you. And I think that all the people who believe like you are right for them. But I don’t want you to tell the other people that what they are doing is wrong." (Joel Becker)
He says it...his issue is with the "religious movement". He went to BHS to present propaganda against anyone "religious". It's appalling that in the name of "education" these people were given a platform! How much were they paid? Money could have been better fertilizing pavement! I'm glad that our youth in America are not as stupid as these panelists are accusing them of being.

This was a Conference on World Affairs panel. The purpose of the conference has always been to stimulate and open the mind- with guests ranging from Bucky Fuller to ex porn stars. Some people feel seriously threatened by that kind of stimulation and those ideas. If you think those students coudn't handle the content you are living in a Bill OReilly world.

I am sick and tired of right wingers using statements out of context to demonize the other side. READ THE TRANSCRIPT PEOPLE. There is nothing obscene about this whatsoever. And nothing irresponsible. I live in Boulder and am proud to live here and proud of this mature panel and discussion.
